Who am I, and why should you believe me?
If I had to take a guess, I would bet that anxiety is chirping in your ear right now, saying “this will never work!” What an asshole!!
My name is Dr. Karen Bartlett, and I made this course because I know how hard it is to fight anxiety. It’s confusing, painful, expensive, and complicated. It takes time. It takes effort. I didn’t always want to be a therapist. My background is in education, and I worked as a teacher at the high school and college levels for many years before I went back to school to earn a doctorate in psychology. I made the switch because I noticed that while I was teaching English, math, reading, and other academic subjects, my students were struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, and other mental health issues that were impacting their lives WAY more than not knowing how to use a semicolon or how to do long division. It occurred to me then that the type of education I wanted to provide was not academic – I wanted to teach people how to thrive! How to live! How to experience joy and peace and love.
I love my work now. I love being a non-traditional teacher, coach, and therapist. I love developing tools for people to take control and create the kind of lives they want.

During the first week of the course, you’ll explore different forms of anxiety, how your anxiety might look different from others, and figure out what strategies you’re using to cope right now. We’ll also talk about the chatterbox in your brain, and start looking at what some of the roots of your anxiety are. We’ll set up your very own personal notebook, which will become your “textbook” for the course, which you can refer back to anytime – even after you’ve completed the course! This week we’ll take a look at thoughts, feelings, and actions, and how those impact anxiety, as well as exploring emotional reasoning, and you’ll meet the Mag and Min twins who like to make a mess of your rational thinking! This week will also cover some basic neurology to help you understand how your brain works when you’re feeling anxious, and you’ll learn about the brain science that helps us kick anxiety’s ass.
In week 2, we will explore myths and misconceptions about anxiety (I bet you have some mistaken ideas about what anxiety is and how it works!). We’ll look at the context you’re living in, because often our anxiety is in response to cultural and social factors, not just our inner workings. We’ll learn about unhelpful thinking patterns like negativity, labeling, mind reading, fortune telling, and personalization, and we’ll discuss the idea of using “wise mind” when exploring anxiety.
Week 3 takes us into more unhelpful thinking styles, including overgeneralization, all or nothing thinking, and mental filters. We’ll talk about affirmations (I know, it seems silly, but it’s science! I promise!). We’ll identify your own personal anxiety monster, get to know it’s quirks and soft spots, and find ways to make anxiety useful for you. Then we’ll wrap up week three with a fear project designed to help you start implementing the tools you’ve learned so far.
During week 4, we’ll be talking about the nervous system, and how it plays into your anxiety. We’ll learn more about the physical symptoms of anxiety, what they mean, and how to handle them, and we’ll dive deep into what *real* self-care looks like. We’ll also talk about medications – different types of meds, pros and cons, and how to talk to your doctor about them. We’ll tackle a few more unhelpful thinking patterns, test and performance anxiety, and how to communicate about your anxiety to other people in your environment.
In week 5, we’ll look more at the short- and long-term physical effects of anxiety and how to balance those out, and we’ll learn a special analysis map to help tackle instances of extreme anxiety or deal with problems resulting from anxious responses. We’ll delve into how to talk to strangers, making small talk with acquaintances, and how to set boundaries in healthy and kind ways. We’ll look at how to handle sleep disruption that comes with anxiety, and figure out ways to help you get better rest. We’ll also talk about perfectionism, procrastination, and paralysis, and we’ll explore the ever-daunting task of making phone calls!
In our final week of work (week 6), we’ll dig deeper into boundary setting, both with others and with yourself. We’ll explore how to handle confrontation, how to stand up for yourself, and how to be assertive without being aggressive. We’ll look at how your anxiety might manifest in the work environment, and also how it might manifest in romantic or intimate relationships. We’ll learn about panic attacks, what they are (and aren’t), and how to help yourself calm down when they happen. And then, as we wrap up, we’ll take a look back at your data collection sheets from the course and see how everything went for you! In our last lesson, we’ll talk more about what’s next, where you’ve been, and where you’re going.

Q: Finances are pretty tight. Can I really afford this?
A: The cost of this program is about the cost of 1-2 therapy sessions with a psychologist, and you would barely scratch the surface of what we cover in the course. While the cost may seem high, investing in this program now will allow you to create a life you love, which will ultimately create more time, space, and energy for you to earn more money, relax more, and feel comfortable in the world around you. While this is certainly an investment to consider seriously, I suspect continuing to struggle with overwhelming anxiety is what you really can’t afford. Q: 42 lessons in 6 weeks seems like a lot. Am I too busy to tackle this right now?
A: 42 lessons in 6 weeks IS a lot! For some people, their anxiety is so overwhelming that they’re ready to commit to a daily practice. For others, a slower pace might feel better. Once you buy the course, you can take as long as you like to complete it. Each day’s lesson ranges from around 10 minutes to 25 minutes, and you’ll know how long each lesson takes before you start it. You can do the activities on your phone, tablet, or home computer, at your own pace and in your own time.
Q: My anxiety feels different than the way I hear other people describe theirs. How do I know this course will fit my anxiety?
A: Everyone’s anxiety is different, that’s for sure. In fact, you might even notice your anxiety has changed over time as you’ve gotten older or as your life circumstances have changed. This course helps you explore all the ways anxiety might be manifesting, and the lessons are designed for you to use them in your own way. In fact, you might learn things about anxiety that you don’t need yet, but you might need in the future!
Q: Once I finish the course, is that it? Then what?

Q: Is this the same thing as therapy?
A: Absolutely not. This is an educational course, not therapy. If you are in therapy, or interested in therapy, this course is an excellent tool to use with your therapist. If you can’t access therapy, or if it’s not right for you, this is a totally different approach to tackling anxiety.
More than anything, I want you to recover from anxiety and take back control of your life.
