Anxiety is an A**hole

anxiety is an asshole headerDay in and day out, I hear from my clients that they feel like anxiety is ruling their lives. Some tell me they have big plans, goals, hopes, and dreams that are derailed by anxiety, and others tell me they crave relief from their anxiety so they can focus on their relationships and self-care. They tell me anxiety inhibits their ability to focus, causes physical health problems, makes it impossible to complete tasks or get work done, triggers constant obsessive overthinking about small things, and makes it difficult to make decisions. They tell me they feel out of control of their own wellness and balance. Some even tell me they have an “anxious personality,” and believe that there’s no hope in sight.

If you’re feeling this way, you’re not alone.

My clients tell me they’ve tried all kinds of things – distracting, trying harder, beating themselves up, avoiding triggers, withdrawing, isolating, and even using substances like alcohol to help manage symptoms. These tactics may feel like they’re working in the short-term, but they’re really just band-aids over a deeper issue. And until you tackle that deeper issue, anxiety won’t go away.

But guess what? Anxiety is not YOU. It is not an inherent part of your personality. Anxiety is that asshole roommate who just won’t leave, and this program is designed to teach you how to evict that jerk so you can get your life back the way you want it to be.

So, in response to all of this suffering and struggle I see from my clients, friends, family, and community members, I developed a self-paced, online course called Anxiety is an Asshole: A 6-Week Guide to Kicking Anxiety’s Ass.

I’m ready to invest in myself.

Instead of trying temporary measures to find a little relief, it may be time for you to invest more deeply in tackling anxiety from a science-based, proven approach. Anxiety is an Asshole is a 6-week anxiety coaching program developed and taught by an experienced therapist. This program is designed to walk you step-by-step through the process of identifying, exploring, and recovering from anxiety. With videos, worksheets, activities, and lots of little extras, you’ll dig deep and learn more about yourself and how to heal as you begin the next phase of your life.

Nothing changes if nothing changes.

It’s time to make a change.

I’M READY TO KICK ANXIETY’S ASS!

Go from Anxious to Empowered in as little as six weeks.

It’s a sticky situation –  you need help with your anxiety, but that same anxiety works hard to prevent you from getting help. Anxiety likes living with you! Anxiety doesn’t pay rent, never pays any bills, leaves its dirty dishes in the sink, lies to you constantly, and basically makes your life a big ol’ mess!

It’s time to take a leap. It’s time to put on your superhero cape, and your super-special anxiety ass-kicking boots. With support, investment, commitment, knowledge, and effort, you will be able to create the life you want for yourself.

You know it’s time.

You’re the kind of person with loads of potential. You’re hard-working, resilient, and passionate. You also value your health and know how important it is to recover from the anxiety that you’re dealing with. Your life isn’t exactly what you had always imagined because of the your anxiety, but you’re not sure how to move forward.

  • You manage to get out of bed in the morning, but it takes every ounce of willpower you have because you’re exhausted by the cycle of anxiety.
  • You put on a happy face for your co-workers and tell your friends you’re fine, but you wish you could stay home and hide from the world because you feel like a failure no matter what the truth is(…the truth is you’re brave for making hard changes.)
  • You’re around people all day, but inside you feel terribly lonely because you feel like you’re the only one dealing with this.
  • You make sure to complete the basic tasks to live, but you can’t handle much more than that without breaking down because all of this anxiety is completely overwhelming.

You know nothing changes if nothing changes.

You know it’s time to stop treating the symptoms, and start attacking the problems.

You know it’s time to step into recovery.

I’M READY TO CHANGE!

I know it sucks.

I understand what it’s like to live with anxiety – not only am I a trained therapist who specializes in anxiety management, but I am also someone who has struggled with an anxiety disorder since childhood. All those symptoms I listed above…. I’ve been there. I’ve felt it. I remember feeling hopeless, and feeling like there was no way out. I regret the damaged relationships, the lost opportunities, and the joyful things I missed out on because anxiety was such a giant asshole.

But there was a way out. And I found it. And I want you to have it too.

My education is valuable – I spent many, many years going through rigorous training to become an expert in anxiety. My suffering is also valuable – I spent many, many years going through the excruciating pain of anxiety, which taught me things no classroom ever could.

Combining my personal experiences with my science-based training, I’ve put together a self-paced course designed to help you learn the things it took me way too long to learn. Boy, do I wish I’d had this course twenty years ago!!

Is this what you want?

  • You get out of bed in the morning feeling confident and ready for the day because you slept well and have your anxiety under control.
  • You smile and laugh genuinely with your friends and family because things are better and you actually feel worthy again.
  • You cherish your free time doing the things you love, because you’ve rediscovered yourself and don’t let fear rule your choices anymore.
  • You complete basic life tasks with ease and still have enough energy and motivation to do self-care acts for yourself every day.
  • You are comfortable setting boundaries and saying noto things that aren’t good for you.
  • You are comfortable saying yes to new things and taking risks.
  • You have moved forward with life and you’re thriving, you’re focused on the future and you LOVE YOUR LIFE!

Anxiety is an Asshole

Anxiety is an Asshole is an anxiety coaching and education program that will help you replace the negative thoughts, patterns, and habits anxiety creates with well-developed tools designed to kick anxiety’s ass. Although it’s designed to fit into 6 weeks, many people prefer to take a little longer to work through the material, and that’s okay! With videos, worksheets, activities, and lots of little extras, you’ll explore and learn more about yourself and how to heal.

Anxiety does NOT have to be a constant struggle – learn how to take control and get your life back!

I’M READY TO GET MY LIFE BACK!

Who am I, and why should you believe me?

If I had to take a guess, I would bet that anxiety is chirping in your ear right now, saying “this will never work!” What an asshole!!

My name is Dr. Karen Bartlett, and I made this course because I know how hard it is to fight anxiety. It’s confusing, painful, expensive, and complicated. It takes time. It takes effort. And I imagine that you (like me) find the experience of constant anxiety to be completely exhausting. If you want to learn more about me, my experience, credentials, and philosophy, check out this page.

I didn’t always want to be a therapist. My background is in education, and I worked as a teacher at the high school and college levels for many years before I went back to school to earn a doctorate in psychology. I made the switch because I noticed that while I was teaching English, math, reading, and other academic subjects, my students were struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, and other mental health issues that were impacting their lives WAY more than not knowing how to use a semicolon or how to do long division. It occurred to me then that the type of education I wanted to provide was not academic – I wanted to teach people how to thrive! How to live! How to experience joy and peace and love.

I love my work now. I love being a non-traditional teacher, coach, and therapist. I love developing tools for people to take control and create the kind of lives they want.

So what’s in this course, and why is it valuable?

Here’s what you’ll get when you enroll in Anxiety is an Asshole:

  • 42 daily video lessons from me that help you recognize unproductive thoughts, patterns, and habits related to your anxiety so you can take back control over your mind and life. If we were doing this work one-on-one, in person, the cost would be around $6,300.
  • 125 worksheets and note guides that help you keep track of your progress, explore your personal experience of anxiety, and solidify the information in the videos. To purchase this workbook separately from the course, the cost would be $65.
  • The opportunity to join the Anxiety is an Asshole Facebook group, which is only open to students who have enrolled in this course. You’ll be able to ask questions about the material, engage with other students, and get support from The Gracious Mind team (how can you put a price on that!?)
  • Once you’ve completed the course successfully, we’ll send you a special gift to help you celebrate (a $25 dollar value).

The TOTAL VALUE is almost $7000!

YOUR INVESTMENT: ONLY $249

Course Curriculum

During the first week of the course, you’ll explore different forms of anxiety, how your anxiety might look different from others, and figure out what strategies you’re using to cope right now. We’ll also talk about the chatterbox in your brain, and start looking at what some of the roots of your anxiety are. We’ll set up your very own personal notebook, which will become your “textbook” for the course, which you can refer back to anytime – even after you’ve completed the course! This week we’ll take a look at thoughts, feelings, and actions, and how those impact anxiety, as well as exploring emotional reasoning, and you’ll meet the Mag and Min twins who like to make a mess of your rational thinking! This week will also cover some basic neurology to help you understand how your brain works when you’re feeling anxious, and you’ll learn about the brain science that helps us kick anxiety’s ass.

In week 2, we will explore myths and misconceptions about anxiety (I bet you have some mistaken ideas about what anxiety is and how it works!). We’ll look at the context you’re living in, because often our anxiety is in response to cultural and social factors, not just our inner workings. We’ll learn about unhelpful thinking patterns like negativity, labeling, mind reading, fortune telling, and personalization, and we’ll discuss the idea of using “wise mind” when exploring anxiety.

Week 3 takes us into more unhelpful thinking styles, including overgeneralization, all or nothing thinking, and mental filters. We’ll talk about affirmations (I know, it seems silly, but it’s science! I promise!). We’ll identify your own personal anxiety monster, get to know it’s quirks and soft spots, and find ways to make anxiety useful for you. Then we’ll wrap up week three with a fear project designed to help you start implementing the tools you’ve learned so far.

During week 4, we’ll be talking about the nervous system, and how it plays into your anxiety. We’ll learn more about the physical symptoms of anxiety, what they mean, and how to handle them, and we’ll dive deep into what *real* self-care looks like. We’ll also talk about medications – different types of meds, pros and cons, and how to talk to your doctor about them. We’ll tackle a few more unhelpful thinking patterns, test and performance anxiety, and how to communicate about your anxiety to other people in your environment.

In week 5, we’ll look more at the short- and long-term physical effects of anxiety and how to balance those out, and we’ll learn a special analysis map to help tackle instances of extreme anxiety or deal with problems resulting from anxious responses. We’ll delve into how to talk to strangers, making small talk with acquaintances, and how to set boundaries in healthy and kind ways. We’ll look at how to handle sleep disruption that comes with anxiety, and figure out ways to help you get better rest. We’ll also talk about perfectionism, procrastination, and paralysis, and we’ll explore the ever-daunting task of making phone calls!

In our final week of work (week 6), we’ll dig deeper into boundary setting, both with others and with yourself. We’ll explore how to handle confrontation, how to stand up for yourself, and how to be assertive without being aggressive. We’ll look at how your anxiety might manifest in the work environment, and also how it might manifest in romantic or intimate relationships. We’ll learn about panic attacks, what they are (and aren’t), and how to help yourself calm down when they happen. And then, as we wrap up, we’ll take a look back at your data collection sheets from the course and see how everything went for you! In our last lesson, we’ll talk more about what’s next, where you’ve been, and where you’re going.

It would be an incredible honor to share in the journey of your transformation at this sensitive time. If you’re ready to move forward and create a life you absolutely love, then let’s get going!

Frequently asked questions

Q: Finances are pretty tight. Can I really afford this?

A: The cost of this program is about the cost of 1-2 therapy sessions with a psychologist, and you would barely scratch the surface of what we cover in the course. While the cost may seem high, investing in this program now will allow you to create a life you love, which will ultimately create more time, space, and energy for you to earn more money, relax more, and feel comfortable in the world around you. While this is certainly an investment to consider seriously, I suspect continuing to struggle with overwhelming anxiety is what you really can’t afford. If making the payment all at once is too much, consider signing up for our 3-month payment plan.

Q: 42 lessons in 6 weeks seems like a lot. Am I too busy to tackle this right now?

A: 42 lessons in 6 weeks IS a lot! For some people, their anxiety is so overwhelming that they’re ready to commit to a daily practice. For others, a slower pace might feel better. Once you buy the course, you can take as long as you like to complete it. Each day’s lesson ranges from around 10 minutes to 25 minutes, and you’ll know how long each lesson takes before you start it. You can do the activities on your phone, tablet, or home computer, at your own pace and in your own time.

Q: My anxiety feels different than the way I hear other people describe theirs. How do I know this course will fit my anxiety?

A: Everyone’s anxiety is different, that’s for sure. In fact, you might even notice your anxiety has changed over time as you’ve gotten older or as your life circumstances have changed. This course helps you explore all the ways anxiety might be manifesting, and the lessons are designed for you to use them in your own way. In fact, you might learn things about anxiety that you don’t need yet, but you might need in the future!

Q: Once I finish the course, is that it? Then what?

A: Throughout the course, you will be developing what I call your “Detective’s Notebook.” You’ll be taking notes, writing down what works and doesn’t work, keeping track of anxiety levels, practicing skills, and making plans. By the end of the course, you’ll essentially have your very own textbook developed by you, for you! Keep that notebook handy, and you’ll be able to refer back to it as you move forward with your life.

Q: I don’t struggle with anxiety, but someone I love does. Will this course help?

A: Absolutely! This course is suitable for people who have anxiety, as well as partners, family members, coworkers, and caregivers for those with anxiety. All of the information covered in the course can be helpful for supporting, affirming, and guiding those around you who are struggling.

Q: Is this the same thing as therapy?

A: Absolutely not. This is an educational course, not therapy. If you are in therapy, or interested in therapy, this course is an excellent tool to use with your therapist. If you can’t access therapy, or if it’s not right for you, this is a totally different approach to tackling anxiety.

Final Note

More than anything, I want you to recover from anxiety and take back control of your life. Times are tough right now, and building resilience and mental strength is a necessary part of living in the world today. I offer this course at such a low price because I know how hard it is to battle anxiety, how few resources are out there, and I want to make it as accessible as possible. Let’s face it – going to therapy isn’t an option for everyone, and even if you’re in therapy, sometimes you need to try something new!

If you’re ready to kick anxiety’s ass, then I’m ready to support you on that journey! Let’s do this together.
